Cassana Estermont

A daughter of Lord Estermont of Greenstone in the stormlands, wed to Lord Steffon Baratheon of Storm's End and mother to three sons who would each, in his turn, declare himself king of the realm: Robert in 262 AC, Stannis in 264 AC, and Renly long after in 277 AC. When in 278 AC King Aerys II sent his cousin Steffon across the narrow sea to find a Valyrian bride for Prince Rhaegar, Cassana sailed with her lord though the queen begged her stay; their carrack Windproud came home with no bride and only a remarkable fool of Volantis named Patchface for cargo, and was caught upon the homeward leg by a storm off the broken coast. The ship was driven onto the rocks of Shipbreaker Bay within sight of Storm's End, where her two eldest sons Robert and Stannis stood the parapet watching, and broke up beneath her with the loss of every soul aboard but the fool. Stannis would say in years after that he stopped believing in any gods upon the day the Windproud came apart across the bay, for that no gods so cruel as to drown his mother and father could ever have his prayer.
