Only son of Prince Aerion Brightflame Targaryen by Princess Daenora — herself one of Rhaegel's three children, sister to the dead twin Aelor and to Aelora the mad — born at King's Landing in 232 AC. His sire chose the name Maegor for him as a provocation against a court that had spent two hundred years trying to forget Maegor the Cruel, and then later that same year drank a cup of wildfire upon a wager that it would change him into a true dragon. When King Maekar fell to a stone at Starpike in 233 AC and the realm had no living adult heir, a Great Council was called at Harrenhal to settle the matter: Maegor's name was put before it as the senior surviving male of the elder branch, his cousin Princess Vaella's name was put before it as the senior of the female line, and his great-uncle Maester Aemon was put forward at the Citadel's quiet suggestion. Only a few spoke for the babe, and those that did were turned by the fear that the boy would grow into his father's madness; the lords chose his great-uncle Prince Aegon, the youngest of Maekar's sons, who was crowned Aegon V. What became of the dispossessed prince after the Council the histories do not say.
