Portrait of Walder Frey

Walder Frey

Born
284 AC

Youngest of the four sons born to Ser Emmon Frey and Genna Lannister, brother to Ser Cleos, Ser Lyonel, and Tion, and so a grandson of the Old Lord of the Crossing through one line and a nephew of Tywin Lannister through the other. Sent to be reared at Casterly Rock rather than at the Twins, he serves there as a page and squire to his Lannister kin, and is called Red Walder either for the crimson of his mother's house upon the Lannister shield or for the color of his own hair, the chroniclers being uncertain which. He is named at the Twins in the year of the false spring when his cousins Big Walder and Little Walder reckoned the long line of Lord Walder's succession aloud at Winterfell, and thereafter passes only through the rolls of the late books, kept fast at the Rock while his elder brothers rode out and died in the war upon the Trident.
