House Targaryen of Dragonstone is the exiled royal house of the Seven Kingdoms. One of forty noble families of dragonlords in the Valyrian Freehold, the Targaryens fled west to the citadel of Dragonstone twelve years before the Doom of Valyria, alone among the dragonlord families to escape the cataclysm with their dragons intact.
A century later, Aegon I Targaryen crossed the Narrow Sea on the back of Balerion the Black Dread, joined by his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys. In a single year of war he forged the Seven Kingdoms into one realm, and the Targaryens ruled from the Iron Throne for nearly three hundred years.
Their reign ended on the Trident, where Prince Rhaegar fell to Robert Baratheon's warhammer. Of the dragons that bore the dynasty to power, none remain. Of the Targaryens themselves, only Viserys and Daenerys, the children of the Mad King, survive in exile across the sea.
